This linear route touches on some of the best spring flooding birding spots in the circle. The flooded areas attract large numbers of geese and ducks each year when the warmer spring weather melts the snow faster than it can run off. The numbers can sometime be astounding, up to 100,000 individuals. This event occurs each year around the first week or two of April. The fun can begin as early as mid-March in exceptional years. Keep posted by listening to the OFNC Bird Status Line.
These sites can vary from year to year, both in flooding and in presence of birds. Over the years the best sites have proved to be Cobbs Lake Creek at Russell Road (Bourget) and adjacent Cobbs Lake Creek north of Ettyville, South Nation River north of Riceville, Bear Brook at Milton Road and Cobbs Lake Creek at Du Lac Road. Be aware that flooding may cause some roads to be closed, you may have to take the long way around to get to some sites.
Other areas, outside this route, which offer good floodplain birding in spring are the Carp River Floodplain and the Jock River at Twin Elm.
