Site Description and Birding Information: This site is included mainly because of the preponderance of winter feeding stations in a well-treed subdivision, making it attractive to over-wintering avifauna and birders. There is a good percentage of conifers in this area, making it attractive for winter finches. The best areas are shaded orange on the map.
Check out Country Place Park and the Black Rapids Creek ravine south of Amberwood Drive for some mature deciduous habitat. There are two somewhat obscure access points this author knows of; one off Amberwood opposite the small ball diamond just east of Chesswood; and another off the walkway between Chesswood and Broad Oaks. Both are poorly defined but public.

Carolina Wren has occurred here both in Dec. 1987 to Jan. 1988 (Mayo & Deerlane Avenues) and in July 1993 (Promenade Avenue). Check especially any hanging suet for this elusive species which likely occurs in very small numbers year round in the Ottawa area.
Rideau River West Side Route Directions: From the Clearview Feeders area, return to Prince of Wales Drive and turn right or south on it. Drive 0.7 km on to the turnoff, on the left, for Black Rapids, the next site on this route.
